Growth gives From Lucy a royal seal of approval

Television celebrities, a football star’s wife and even the Royal Family are among the high profile clients of an innovative personalised gifts company which has been given an online business boost by e-commerce specialists Vertical Plus.

Tavistock-based From Lucy has just secured an order from the official office of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to produce one of its ‘Day You Were Born’ commemorative books for Princess Charlotte.

Not bad for a company that started life in artist Lucy Tapper’s greenhouse where she would sit with a pad sketching design ideas thinking it would be a good way of earning a bit of money to pay for her children’s childcare and toys.

Six years on, From Lucy has customers around the globe including other VIP clients, England footballer Wayne Rooney’s wife Coleen and TV personalities Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton and Emma Willis.

Lucy now employs a design team creating a range of bespoke books, greeting cards, prints and other personalised gifts under the company slogan – ‘Made with Love’.

The thriving business is being supported by Plymouth e-commerce and marketing firm Vertical Plus, which is helping From Lucy go to the next level. Vertical Plus has created a brand new website designed to further grow sales alongside the other large online retailers Lucy and her husband/business partner Steve Wilson already use.

“With no backing or money, Lucy’s managed to impress Moonpig, Phoenix Cards and Not on the High Street with her designs and the business really started to take off,” said Steve.

“We approached Vertical Plus because we needed a fresh, new website to grow our own direct sales with the very latest e-commerce technology that allowed customers to order online and preview their designs while customising them.”

From Lucy became an e-commerce partner with Vertical Plus – which is based at Plymouth Science Park – in February and the new website is already having an impact. Less than a month after launch, traffic to the website was up ten per cent on the previous period and orders also increased significantly.

Support from Vertical Plus has also enabled From Lucy to have a much larger team working on and updating the website, as well as associated social media activity. It is also helping Lucy and Steve create new product ideas and to better investigate their market.

Andersen May, E-commerce Partnership Manager at Vertical Plus, said: “This was a very large and complex project for us with a lot of technical work undertaken. It is still early days, but we are already seeing an impact and the functionality of the site has helped From Lucy streamline the business far more effectively.”

Both Steve and Lucy and all the From Lucy team are delighted with the new website and are working with Vertical Plus on some further big plans they have for the business.

“It’s been a lot of hard work to get where we are. Now we not only have our fantastic team in the From Lucy studio, but also the reassuring back up of the very talented and dedicated team at Vertical Plus,” added Steve.
