Success to the house that Harris built

E-commerce specialist Vertical Plus is helping a Plymouth-based gift shop deliver spectacular online sales results – while proving there’s still plenty of life in the High Street.

House of Harris of Faraday Mill Business Park is bucking the continued trend of retailers focussing on internet sales by opening a second shop in Exeter for its range of high quality fragrance candles, cosmetics, burners, ceramic gifts and accessories.

The expansion by owners Chris and Charlotte Harris is thanks to a hugely successful partnership with Plymouth’s e-commerce and marketing company Vertical Plus, whose expertise has put House of Harris on course to reach £5 million in online sales this year.

The Vertical Plus team of e-commerce specialists has delivered a new website and helped the company tap into the ebay market – boosting sales even more dramatically.

In 2015 – the first full year Vertical Plus partnered with House of Harris – traffic to the website increased 12 fold at Christmas compared to the same period the previous year with the highest combined sales recorded in November, from their website, ebay and Amazon.

Such has been the success of the partnership House of Harris even sold more products from its website in July this year than in December 2015, a traditionally busier time for its products in the run up to Christmas.

The strong online trading figures continue in 2016 with sales on average 2.5 times more than 2015 with around 14,000 orders shipped a month. The website is now an extremely strong sales vehicle for the business too, with more than 12,000 visitors a month.

Robert Horne, a Chartered Marketer and E-Commerce strategist at Vertical Plus, said he is delighted with the results the company continues to deliver for House of Harris.

“We have helped Chris and Charlotte achieve sales figures that are ten times what they were when they first approached us,” said Robert.

“Given the short space of time we have worked with them coupled with the very competitive nature of their market, it is a hugely significant result.”

Chris Harris, who jointly owns the business with his wife, said the brand had come a long way since it started life in a small cupboard at the family home.

The couple drew on the 25 years of shop keeping experience and expertise of Chris’s parents to launch the business in 2012 and now both stock and deliver major brands such as Yankee Candle, Willow Tree, Ashleigh & Burwood and Bomb Cosmetics.

“The support of Vertical Plus has been transformational for the business and has helped us realise our ambition of a second shop in Exeter,” said Chris.

“We know how important it is to maintain a strong internet presence as we take the business forward, but there is definitely a place on the high street for our type and range of products. That’s why we are certain the new outlet will be as successful as our Plymouth store has proved to be.
“We aim to deliver a great shopping experience for our customers whether they visit us online or in store!”
